Abstract
Rare earth elements are of increasing strategic importance over time, and this study aims to define them and clarify their industrial, political and strategic importance, especially since they are linked to technological progress, which is one of its most important components at the present time. However, this most important component of progress is the most difficult to provide, due to the scarcity of these elements in economic quantities worthy of extraction, as scientific reports indicate that the means of obtaining them are among the most prominent causes of the problems facing the economies of developed countries. The study clarified the nature of the supply adopted by the countries that produce these elements, especially China, and the political pressures and threats it exerts towards major countries that prompted them to expand research and exploration operations for these limited elements. The study concluded with a set of results on which a set of recommendations were based that could contribute to alleviating the manifestations of the problem.
