Abstract
The Sahel region of Africa has great economic importance, with its enormous and diverse wealth, not to mention the strategic importance . It is almost in the mi ddle of the continent, with a vast area encircling the continent as a belt from the shore of the Red Sea to the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, a unique cultural and ethnic diversity, Islam unites most of its inhabitants, and a large presence of the Arabic l anguage and culture . The realization of the countries of the region and their quest to establish regional entities was early in attempts to create a development reality, as the organization of the states bordering the Sahara in 1962 was the first politica l regional entities, where it was believed that immediately after achieving independence and sovereignty, development and its benefits would follow . This was followed by the Sahel -Saharan grouping and the birth of the Sahel Sahel-Sahara grouping, which was esta blished in 1998 with the banner of security and development in the fragile and troubled region and its adoption of development plans, strategies and programs aimed at achieving economic well well-being, fighting poverty and equitable geographical distribution o f development development. Given the economic and strategic importance of the region, its ethnic diversity, the breadth of its geographical area, the instability of many of its countries, and the intensification of foreign competition over it have created a reali ty and other challenges that force decision makers and development planners to adopt development programs and strategies to address the fragile development reality to reduce the effects of instability suffered by those countries, perhaps the security and development strategy of the grouping is a model. It is part of the achievement of the goals of the African Union Agenda 2063 (Agenda 2063), and took into account the Sustainable Development Goals of economic growth and social inclusion, the protection of th e environment and resources in the region and the international partnership to combat extremism, and its adoption of the five five-year plan of priority actions with the aim of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in the region by 2030 . Also, the region al program for the youth, which is an added value to the security and development strategy, benefiting from the successes and failures that marred all previous programs, plans and strategies of the grouping . It focuses on the youth segment in the region a nd enhances their role in sustainable development, which restores hope to this community group, which has long been the most affected by its involvement in conflicts, and targeted by extremist groups operating in the region . This is what this research pap er is trying to address in an attempt to analyze the reality and challenges of sustainable development and its future in the Sahel region of Africa under the umbrella of the regional grouping Sahel and Sahara (Cen Cen-Sad), where the researcher will address th e following demands : The concept of sustainable development - The reality and challenges of sustainable development in the Sahel region of Africa -The future of sustainable development in the Sahel region of Africa
