Spatial Approaches in the Narratives of Ziad Ali
Main Article Content
Abstract
Our country has witnessed a comprehensive civilizational renaissance—politically, socially, economically, and culturally—requiring a literature that accompanies this transformation, embodies its values, and voices the hopes of the people. Such literature is incomplete without conscious criticism that guides its course and refines its presentation, especially as it now spans various forms of expression: poetry, essays, studies, stories, novels, and drama.
Dr. Ziyad Ali’s literary work encompasses most of these genres, particularly the short story. He draws his themes from the memory of his parents—both accomplished folk poets—which lends his writings a distinctly popular tone. He declares himself more a product of the streets than of schools, shaped by the cities he wandered alone.
The uniqueness of his writing lies in his deep awareness of the role of place as a dynamic narrative element, not merely a setting. He successfully transforms spaces into symbols filled with emotional and intellectual significance, expressing the human condition and internal conflicts. His spatial approach stands as a contemporary critical model, demonstrating how place can shape narrative structure and influence the reader.
Through this, Ziyad Ali has made a creative and critical contribution to modern Arabic literature, turning place into a powerful medium for conveying human vision in times of transformation.
