Abstract
The study aimed to identify the factors affecting the low academic achievement in mathematics among university students through the following axes: identifying the educational and instructional factors contributing to the decline in students’ academic achievement in mathematics, identifying the psychological factors affecting university students’ motivation to learn mathematics, examining the extent to which the family and social environment influences students’ academic achievement in mathematics, and exploring the prevailing perceptions and attitudes of university students towards mathematics and their relationship to academic achievement. The descriptive method was adopted due to its suitability for the study’s objectives. The study reached the following results: The results indicated that educational and instructional factors at the university level had a clear impact on the decline in students’ academic achievement in mathematics. The study revealed that psychological factors among university students directly affect their motivation to learn mathematics. The results showed that the family and social environment continues to be an influential factor in university students’ academic achievement. The study highlighted a strong relationship between university students’ perceptions and attitudes towards mathematics and their academic achievement in the subject.
