Abstract

The arrival of functional thought in the field of linguistics had a major role in bringing about a qualitative shift in the orientations of researchers in the study of language after a period characterized by the dominance of pure structuralism, which looked at language in isolation from its communicative function. This thought was able to achieve broad achievements that distinguished it from other currents. Functional studies advanced, expanded their scope in many countries, and outperformed other trends that competed with them. All of this resulted in major studies that fell under its thought and also branched out into a number of Theories.
