Abstract

Geography departments in Libyan universities constitute the primary foundation for preparing specialized professionals capable of understanding and analyzing spatial environments. This study aimed to assess the current state of these departments and explore prospects for their development in light of the contemporary technological boom. The study adopted the descriptive-analytical approach and utilized a questionnaire as the main data collection tool, targeting a sample of 20 faculty members. The results revealed a strong academic and administrative willingness toward development, as 100% of participants agreed on the need to update curricula and integrate modern technologies. However, the study identified a significant "technological gap," with 90% of respondents reporting the absence of adequately equipped laboratories, resulting in a heavy reliance on theoretical teaching (90%). The findings also indicated a divergence in evaluating graduates’ practical skills, despite the availability of employment opportunities. The study concluded with several recommendations, most notably the need to invest in digital infrastructure (GIS and remote sensing) and to develop curricula in alignment with the requirements of sustainable development and the labor market.
