Abstract

This research examines the doctrinal text in contemporary modernist thought in terms of its methodological foundations and reading mechanisms, as well as how these approaches are critically assessed. It highlights the main intellectual references adopted by these approaches, such as the centrality of reason, historicism, and the relativity of meaning, in addition to the employment of modern methodologies including deconstruction, hermeneutics, historical criticism, and linguistic analysis. The study discusses the impact of these methods on reshaping the understanding of the doctrinal text outside the interpretive frameworks established in the Islamic tradition, and the resulting epistemological issues related to the nature of the doctrinal text and its specificity as a revelatory text with fixed foundational meanings. It also sheds light on the presence of Western philosophical references in guiding some modernist interpretations. The research concludes with the necessity of methodologically regulating the engagement with the doctrinal text in a way that achieves a balance between benefiting from modern approaches and preserving the interpretive principles of the Islamic tradition.
