Curriculum and Education on Sustainable Development and the Green Economy

Abstract

This research paper explores the fundamental role of educational curricula in advancing the concepts of Sustainable Development (SD) and the Green Economy, grounded in the premise that education is the most effective tool for human and economic progress. The study begins by emphasizing the developmental core of educational action, viewing the curriculum as a vital cultural program that enables individuals to evolve and adapt within their environment. It defines sustainable development as a model that meets present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own, highlighting its three interconnected pillars: environmental, social, and economic. The paper further delves into the "Green Economy" as a methodology designed to enhance human well-being and social equity while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities. It introduces related concepts such as Green Education, Green Awareness, and Sustainable Consumption, noting that the Green Economy serves as a strategic framework to achieve sustainability goals through resource conservation and technological innovation. Regarding practical implementation, the study outlines four primary strategies for integrating these concepts into school curricula: the Extra-curricular Activities strategy, the Independent Courses strategy, the Integration strategy, and the Educational Projects strategy. It also underscores the importance of an environmental perspective in developmental philosophy, stressing the need to equip learners with values through cognitive, skill-based, and emotional dimensions. The study concludes by proposing integrated educational topics covering all dimensions of sustainability, emphasizing the teacher's pivotal role in fostering a culture of sustainability and developing students' critical thinking skills to address future challenges effectively.
