Abstract

This research presents a thematic study of the root (N-H-Y) in the Holy Quran, aiming to explore its linguistic, legislative, and social dimensions. The study utilizes both inductive and thematic analysis methodologies to track the root’s 56 occurrences within the Quranic text.
The research concludes that "prohibition" in the Quran transcends the mere request to cease or abstain from an action, becoming deeply linked to internal self-restraint (restraining the soul from whims/desires). Furthermore, the study highlights the historical evolution of prohibition: the Meccan phase emphasized cognitive foundations and historical lessons, whereas the Medinan phase shifted toward "obligation," establishing prohibition as a social and sovereign function for the Ummah. The study underscores that forbidding evil is an individual obligation (Fard ‘Ayn) for every person, regarding it as a "safety valve" for societal immunity.
