Abstract

Among the misconceptions that prevent in-depth scientific reflection on secularism are limiting its problems to the relationship with the Islamic religion alone, and the illusion that the Western origins of secularism are linked solely to the authority of the Church and the separation of religion and state. This misconception is held by Islamists who believe that the absence of a religious institution in Islam is sufficient to overcome the problems of secularism, which is a Western necessity. Secularists also fall into this illusion, believing that the victory of the Western Enlightenment over the authority of the Church represents a break with and transcendence of religion. Both of these perceptions are simplistic, giving the impression that the West has overcome the problematic relationship with religion or has become a model for the Arab world to emulate. Contemporary studies, and even existing scholarly projects in Western academia, indicate that religion and its place in life are a controversial and vital topic that is receiving increasing attention, including the topic of secularism itself and its concept.
