Geographical Analysis of the Demographic Reality and Economic Distribution of the Workforce in Libya in 2022
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study aimed to analyze the demographic and economic distribution of the workforce in Libya in 2022 by examining the relationship between population characteristics (gender, age, and educational level) and participation in economic activity. It also seeks to identify the geographical disparities in the Libyan labor market. The researcher adopted the descriptive approach, relying on data from the National Statistical Office and Census Authority, as well as international reports issued by the World Bank and the United Nations Development Programme. Statistical tables and indicators such as unemployment rates and economic activity rates were also used.
The study concluded that Libya has a young population structure representing an important demographic window of opportunity. However, the labor market suffers from clear structural imbalances, most notably high unemployment rates among youth and women, low female participation in economic activity, and noticeable spatial disparities in the distribution of employment opportunities. The findings also revealed a positive relationship between education and economic participation, alongside a persistent gap between educational outputs and labor market needs, as well as a strong dependence on the public sector for employment.
The study recommended the need to develop employment policies targeting youth and women, enhance the alignment between education and labor market requirements, expand the role of the private sector in job creation, and ensure spatial equity in the distribution of development projects. It also suggested establishing specialized vocational training and qualification programs, supporting entrepreneurship and small and medium-sized enterprises, updating educational curricula to match the requirements of the modern economy, and improving the investment environment to broaden employment opportunities in Libya.
