Production of a digital atlas of the population of the Tripoli region: Spatial variance analysis of population characteristics using Geographic Information Systems (1973-2014)

Abstract
This research dealt with the preparation of a digital population atlas for the Tripoli region, through the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) techniques in analyzing the demographic characteristics and spatial changes of the population during the period from the 1973 censuses to the 2014 estimates. The study relied on building an integrated geographic database, and processing statistical data using spatial analysis tools and quantitative techniques, including calculating numerical and relative change rates and population density at the municipal level. The study results showed a clear spatial variation in population distribution, as central municipalities recorded high population densities compared to municipalities located in the southern regions, with dynamic shifts in distribution patterns as a result of urban expansion. The change indicators also revealed unbalanced population growth among municipalities, which confirms that there is a disparity in the levels of population attraction and services. Hence, it confirms the effectiveness of the digital atlas as an advanced analytical tool in visually representing population data and showing spatial patterns with high accuracy, which supports urban planning and decision-making processes. The study recommends the need to update geographic databases periodically and to promote the use of modern geographic technologies in population studies to achieve a deeper understanding of demographic shifts.
